Water and Chemical Questions
  • What do I do when my pool water is green?

     Print

Shock the pool with 1 gallon of liquid chlorine for every 5000 gallons of pool water, then one hour later apply an algeacide as per the directions. If you have a concentrated algeacide be sure to fill a bucket with water and then add the algeacide to the bucket before stirring and placing in the pool. If the water is still green when chlorine concentration drops down to 3-5ppm repeat procedure.

If after the second time the water is not any better bring a water sample for a free test.

  • Why does my pH bounce from low to high and then high to low?

     Print

Many people think that the only water balance factor to monitor is pH. pH is important but not as important as Total Alkalinity. Total Alkalinity works as a buffer for pH: when it is low, pH tends to bounce and be difficult to keep in the recommended range (7.4 - 7.6).

  • Why is it important to have my water balanced and what does it mean?

     Print

Balanced water is when all chemical levels are within the proper range at the same time. This is important because if the balance becomes low, the water can become corrosive and harm pool surfaces and equipment. If the balance becomes too high, scale build-up will occur. Skin and eye irritation, staining and cloudy water are also likely to occur with unbalanced water.

  • What is causing the "ring around the tile" in my pool and how do I get rid of it?

     Print
The main cause for this problem is an accumulation of bather dirt and oils. The best (and safest) way to get rid of this problem is to scrub the areas with our cleaner.  You can prevent the build up by regularly using our natural enzyme cleaner in your pool.
  • Why is it important to shock my pool?

     Print

You should shock treat your pool on a regular basis to destroy the build-up of organic waste and chloramines in the pool water. Chloramines cause skin and eye irritation as well as a chlorine odor.

  • What is chlorine stabilizer?

     Print

By adding stabilizer to your pool you reduce your overall chlorine consumption. This is because stabilizer prevents the chlorine from breaking down and dissipating.

  • How often should I test my water?

     Print

Bring in a water sample twice a year so that one of the pool center professionals can test your water. We'll do other tests that only need to be done once you open the pool and before you close it. Otherwise it is recommendeed to test your water for Chlorine and pH balance once a week.

  • Convert from Baquiacil to Chlorine

     Print
BAQUACIL is not compatible with chlorinating pool chemical products. Addition of chlorine or chlorine release products to a BAQUACIL pool will cause cloudiness and depletion of BAQUACIL. Instructions are provided below for the conversion from baquacil to a chlorine system.

CHANGING THE WATER IS ONE OPTION

(Portable Spas – definitely change the water)

If it is a feasible option, emptying and refilling the pool with fresh water is one way of getting rid of the baquacil in your pool (or spa).  Before carrying out this exercise, be absolutely sure to confirm that it is OK to empty your pool – with respect to the pool structure itself and to the presence and level of ground-water at the pool site.  (Empty pools in high ground-water conditions tend to want to ‘float’ and can rise out of the ground).  Besides emptying the pool, the filter must be cleaned completely of the baquacil residues.  Cartridges must be thoroughly cleaned, or better still, replaced.  Sand filters should be restocked with fresh filter sand.

When the pool is refilled, use conventional startup procedures and additives to remove potential staining minerals from the water at to adjust pH, Total Alkalinity, Calcium hardness etc. (Not important with portable spas).  Add necessary start up chemicals to the pool and operate according to directions.

    CONVERSION OF EXISTING POOL WATER

    1. With filler running, adjust pH (if necessary) to 6.8 to 7.0.

    2. Add sufficient pool grade oxidizer potassium peroxymonosulfate also called monopersulfate or MPS, to give a level of 50 to 60 ppm (about 10-12 pounds per 25 000 gallons of pool water); sprinkle the monopersulfate around the sides of the pool being careful to avoid getting on skin or clothes.  Observe handling precautions on product labels.

    3. Continue to run filter for 48 hours and add no other chemicals; do not be alarmed if water turns green.

    4. After 48 hours, test for BAQUACIL with the BAQUACIL Test Kit.

    a)  If the BAQUACIL level is not at zero, add 5 pounds more monopersulfate and continue to filter for up to 48 hours or until BAQUACIL test reading is zero.

    5. When a zero BAQUACIL test reading is obtained,
                a)  Remove one gallon of pool water in a bucket.
                b)  Dissolve 1 ½ ounces of ‘pool chlorine’ sanitizer in one pint of tap water.
                c)  Add this pint to the bucket of pool water.
There should be no heavy precipitate.  If there is, repeat steps 4a to 5c.  If there is NO PRECIPITATE, adjust pool water pH to 7.2 to 7.6, add necessary chlorine ( 1 gallon per 5,000) to the pool and operate your system according to directions.

    6. Continue filtration until pool is clear.  Once pool is switched over, it is a good idea to change the sand or cartridge in compatible system or soak the grids in a D.E. system.

    7. It is a good idea to have us analyze a sample of your water to make sure the stabilizer (conditioner) level and water balance are in correct ranges.
